Instead, the role is centered on continuous personal support, helping a mother feel informed, prepared, and supported throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum period. Support That Continues Beyond The Birth Room One of the main differences between doula support and routine maternity care is continuity. A doula gets to know the person, their preferences, concerns, and hopes before labor begins. That relationship can make it easier to communicate openly when plans change or difficult decisions arise.
